Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

Emotional intelligence, or EQ, is the ability to recognise and manage your own emotions and to read and respond well to the emotions of others — spanning self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skill.

Popularised by psychologist Daniel Goleman, EQ underpins strong communication, leadership, and collaboration. It is what lets someone stay composed under pressure, read a room, and respond to others with tact.

Unlike IQ, EQ can be developed at any age through awareness and deliberate practice — which is why it is a common focus of leadership and soft skills training.
